Accessibility

We want this site to be usable by everyone who comes to it, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard on its own, magnification, or a phone held one handed on a bus.

What we aim for

We build maliko.ca to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. That’s the standard Canadian public bodies are held to, and we’d rather hold ourselves to it than wait to be asked.

What we actually do

• Every page is checked with axe against WCAG 2.2 AA, at phone width and at desktop width, before it goes out.
• The site works without a mouse. There’s a skip link to the main content, and focus is visible wherever it lands.
• Nothing moves unless you’re willing to let it. If your system asks for reduced motion, the animation stops.
• Every image that carries meaning has alt text that says what’s in it, not what it’s called. The pie chart on the home page is labelled with every category and its share, so you never have to tell colours apart to read it.
• Colour is never the only thing carrying information.
• The pages are plain HTML with real headings, real tables and real lists. They read in order with no scripts running.

Where it falls short

• The recreated spreadsheet is a wide table. It scrolls sideways inside its own region, which you can reach and move with a keyboard, but on a narrow screen it’s still a table you have to scroll.
• Screenshots of EvenHearth have alt text describing what each screen shows, which is a summary rather than the screen itself. The app has its own accessibility work, and this statement doesn’t speak for it.
• We test with axe and by hand. We don’t yet have an audit from someone outside the company, or testing with people who use assistive technology daily. Both are worth doing and neither has happened.

Telling us something’s wrong

If any part of this site keeps you from reading something or doing something, email contact@maliko.ca and say what happened, what you were using, and which page. You don’t need to know the technical name for the problem.

We answer accessibility reports within five business days. If a fix takes longer than that, we’ll tell you what we’re doing and get you the information another way in the meantime.
